For Tuesdays on the Run we are grading our running for the month of January…
January was my weak attempt at getting back into running after having a baby. I use the term “weak”, but honestly, I gave this month my best shot. I have to give my readers a lot of credit. Y’all told me that I was going to have a difficult time and should’ve listened.
This time around, having a baby did a number on my body. Much more so than my firstborn. I used to take naps during the day when my oldest was a baby, but now that I have a toddler and a newborn- there aren’t any naps! No naps plus no sleep at night is awful. I feel exhausted, still out of shape and struggling to control my body again.
I started out January strong- almost too strong. I was so motivated watching all of my friends run at WDW Marathon weekend. I was logging miles daily- every other day running and walking in between. The scale was showing some improvement and I felt like I had a great start to dropping the baby weight and being fit again.
But then I had to go hurt myself.
Just as I was starting to get into the groove of my pre-pregnancy fitness routine, I injured my right knee. It took one lunge, during cross training, and I tore my meniscus. I thought to myself “no big deal”, I will feel better in a week or so.
It only felt worse. Keep in mind- I’ve got Run Disney’s Princess Half weekend next month. A few days after the injury and I couldn’t even walk to buy groceries. That’s when my January fitness momentum dropped off.
My sweet Mom & Dad urged me to get to the doctor and that’s when I found out that I tore my meniscus. The pregnancy hormone, relaxin, was working against me. My ligaments were weak and I hurt myself by doing too much too soon. Technically, I’ll need surgery in March, but I can still go to Princess Half. I’ll probably be walking though.
The doctor gave me some anti-inflammatory’s and I’m starting to feel better. I’ll start walking for some last minute Princess training for February.
So I feel like I’m starting back at square one- again. I’m focusing on eating healthy to take the baby weight off until I can get back into my fitness routine again. I just need to take it easy. Just because I got the green light to exercise at my 6 week appointment, doesn’t mean I can do it all. After all, I’m just 8 weeks postpartum now. It’s just not easy for me to be out of shape.
So- I’d give my self an “incomplete” running grade for January.
Tell me: How would you grade your month of January training?
