For Tuesdays on the Run we are talking all about how much we pay for races. Do you have a limit to how much you’ll pay? As a Run Disney enthusiast, I pay a lot of money! I don’t even go to set a personal record. I run at Disney because there truly is magic in their races.
I ran my first Run Disney race in 2013 and profusely thanked my Husband for the “once in a lifetime” experience. I never thought I would run another one until after I finished. I immediately felt that Run Disney addiction and had to have more.
Still, like any us, I have a limit on race fees. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately as I am about to sign up for the 2018 Dopey Challenge for a whopping $560. I’ll admit- that is a big chunk of money. I don’t think I would ever pay more than that for a challenge. But divided among 4 days and you feel like it’s a great deal. That’s called “Disney math”.
Since I pay so much for Run Disney races, I’ve come to expect a lot too. I’ve grown accustomed to the race entertainment, fuel provided, tech shirts, etc. I recognize that I’m paying a pretty penny for those things, but I don’t think I would of ever become a runner without the magic that Run Disney provides.
Boring local races are just means to a proof of time for me… so I can run another Run Disney race! Obsessed? You could say that.
I don’t own a gym membership (or even my own car) so there are many areas in life that I save money. I give myself permission to keep signing up for Run Disney races because I don’t have a gym membership. It’s the only motivation that I pay for to be healthy. You can’t put a price on health, right?
At least that’s how I explain it to my Husband!
I understand when runners are appalled by Run Disney prices though. It’s a lot of money compared to local races, especially if it’s your first time and you don’t know what you’re paying for. Plus the cost of hotel, food and possibly park tickets adds even more to the overall cost. I’ve brought my entire family to a Run Disney race weekend so it feels more like a vacation and our money is going further.
I’ll keep paying the high Run Disney race registration fees because I can justify it right now. But I hope that the prices don’t escalate much higher. Many days the magic of Run Disney is the only motivation I have to lace up for a run, so it would be a shame if it didn’t fit into my budget anymore.
