Disney announced this morning that big changes have arrived to the US theme parks:
1) Metal detectors were added to theme park entrances.
2) Toy guns will no longer be sold or allowed in the parks.
3) Adults over age 14 are not allowed to wear costumes.
With recent tragic events in the news, the first two changes came as no surprise and I feel like it’s been long overdue. But, the 3rd change really took me by surprise. Apparently, it even applies to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party, an event held in the Fall where families dress in costume for a Magic Kingdom party.
With the sudden changes that literally took place overnight, social media is bursting with questions and speculation. But particularly, Run Disney runners immediately wondered how it would affect them.
Most Run Disney runners dress in some sort of costume that ranges from a themed t-shirt to a full length costume and makeup. My costumes fall more on the practical side, but it left me wondering the same thing: can we still run in costume?
I’ve spent $100+ on costumes for races, so it’s important to know what the future holds for Run Disney costumes runners.
Run Disney didn’t officially address the issue alone, but they did send out an email to the upcoming Star Wars light side Disneyland runners:
Fortunately, It seems like Run Disney is still welcoming costumes with the same restrictions they’ve always had. But I’m sure as more questions arise and Marathon Weekend approaches, we’ll get more details on the rules.
I can’t imagine a Run Disney race without costumes runners. It’s part of the magical Run Disney equation that keeps runners coming back year after year. My only hope is that runners can abide by any new rules, welcomes the changes and keep running those magical miles.
But with that said, I DO plan on bringing back up clothing options to Marathon Weekend…just in case!
